This second victory follows the first one in June 2015.</p> <p>New skills needed to be demonstrated by the competing robots at this stage of the contest: the capacity to detect abnormal noises, to climb and descend stairs, to avoid obstacles intuitively, to move to safety when an alarm went off and to connect automatically to a charging point. The VIKINGS robot did not run into too many problems during the tests, including the actual run on Thursday: fire alarm, Wi Fi connectivity issues and water leakage simulation.</p> <p> « The mechanical components of the robot, designed and built by SOMINEX are reliable efficient and robust. The embedded systems, the software and the integrated sensors designed by IRSEEM performed well too », explained Xavier Savatier, coordinator of team VIKINGS.</p> <p>The third and final competition awaits the teams in the running. This last round will take place in March 2017 and *** the grand winner of Challenge ARGOS. In this final stage robots will have to be even more autonomous, their systems will have to comply with ATEX norms, a mandatory requirement for such machines to function in oil and natural gas rigs. They have been preparing for several months for the second stage of the international robotics competition, ARGOS, organised by Total, in partnership with ANR. This is the home stretch for the French team and its four international opponents, as the second round will take place in March.</p> <p>Teams from across the globe, Japan, Austria, Spain Switzerland and France are competing against eachother in the ARGOS Challenge, which aims to create the robot of the future, capable of providing surveillance and technical maintenance of an oil rig in extreme conditions autonomously.</p> <p>In this second round, new competences will be required, especially the capacity to identify abnormal noises (ex. gas leaks, cavitation in pipelines), to climb up and going down staircaes, to negotiate random obstacles in its path, to take cover if an alarm goes off and to connect to a recharging terminal automatically.</p> <p>To fulfill these new requirements, the VIKINGS robot has undergone several technical modifications : change in measuring tower and obstacle sensor in order to gain weight, integration of wide-angle cameras to give the user a panoramic birdview, installation of a turret with visible thermal imaging cameras in keeping with ATEX norms.</p> <p>VIKINGS has already been awarded by Normandie Aérospace by being selected for the 12 Pépites RTI (Research, Technology, Innovation). After being the only French team selected among the 5 finalists of the ARGOS Challenge, they have just won the 1<sup>st</sup> competition with their VIKINGS robot.</p> <p>The ARGOS Challenge aims at conceiving the next generation of robots, able to ensure the surveillance and technical maintenance of an oil and gas offshore or onshore platform in the most extreme conditions and in total autonomy. The research and development process runs for 3 years and the competition consists of 3 rounds on the test site in Lacq (Midi-Pyrénées, southern France) : one in June 2015, the second one in March 2016 and the last one in December 2016. The trials will become more and more complex.</p> <p>In the first round, the robot had to be able to achieve automatic inspection missions under real conditions. The script was given to the teams 2 hours prior to the competition: the robot had to go through control points to read the needle of gauges to check the state of pressure sensors and to determine whether the floodgates were open or closed. Unexpected obstacles were added and the robot also had to be able to go over a 20-centimeter-high obstacle, in order to automatically climb on or off the platform.</p> <p>The VIKINGS robot was able to perform the first mission on automatic mode in less than 4 minutes instead of the 20 minutes available. Despite a few technical incidents, the robot was a step ahead from its Japanese, Austrian, Spanish and Swiss opponents, as the jury declared VIKINGS winner of the 1<sup>st</sup> round.</p> <p>The team comes back from Lacq with a 1<sup>st</sup> objective… and a new objective: March 2016. By then, the robot should be able to identify unusual sounds such as gas leaks or cavitation bubbles inside the pipes. It should go and check for unknown obstacles or fire extinguishers. Students, faculty and staff were invited to conferences, workshops and shows, and had the opportunity to experience the international diversity of the school.</p> <p><img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/actualites/iw1.jpg" style="float:right; height:150px; line-height:20.7999992370605px; margin:4px; width:200px" /></p> <p>International Week was organized around four themes : Art and Culture, ESIGELEC's International Students, Going Abroad and Music &amp; Dance. It opened with a conference by the Taiwanese Ambassador to France, LU Michel. His intervention won the students over ; they particularly appreciated his humor and his oratory skills.</p> <p>Later in the week, Philippe Eudeline, member of the board and a foreign trade advisor, gave a conference on French International Volunteers in Business and alumni participated in a round table discussion to share their experiences abroad.</p> <p><img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/actualites/iw2.jpg" style="float:left; height:150px; margin-left:4px; margin-right:4px; width:200px" />International students were also very pleased to showcase activities and specialties from their countries : games, traditional costumes, food...<br /> The event ended on a festive note, as students performed music and dance numbers in front of their classmates, faculty and staff.</p> <p>In parallel, three photo exhibitions were on display all week :<br /> - "International students in Rouen"<br /> - "ESIGELEC students abroad"<br /> - "ESIGELEC Alumni around the world"</p> <p>And every day at the cafeteria, the chef prepared themed meals : Asian, American, Indian, Caribbean and North African.</p> <p>International Week involved over 100 contributors and was appreciated by all participants. The structure offers a test and simulation environment for the Vikings team to prepare as best as they for the 1st competition of the ARGOS Challenge.</p> <p><img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/actualites/photo-argos1.jpg" style="border-style:solid; border-width:0px; float:right; height:100px; line-height:20.7999992370605px; margin-left:6px; margin-right:6px; width:122px" /></p> <p>The ARGOS Challenge, organized by Total in partnership with the French National Research Agency, aims to design the next generation of autonomous robots. They should be able to carry out the technical monitoring of onshore and offshore oil and gas platforms. They should also be capable of performing interventions in urgent situations, in the most extreme conditions. The international challenge consists of 3 competitions, the 1st of which will take place in June 2015 in Lacq, a small town located in the South of France.</p> <p><img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/actualites/photo-argos2.jpg" style="border-style:solid; border-width:0px; float:left; height:100px; margin-left:6px; margin-right:6px; width:133px" />The structure has two floors: the ground floor includes floodgates, gauges and tanks. The robot is equipped with various cameras and should be able to determine whether the floodgates are open or closed, depending on the position of their levers. It should also be able to read the pressure of the fluids on the gauges and assess the temperature of the tanks thanks to its thermal imaging camera. The second floor will be used for the 2nd competition in 2016: by then, the robot should be capable of climbing up and down the stairs.</p> <p>The VIKINGS project is conducted by IRSEEM and SOMINEX, an SME located in Bayeux and specialized in high tech.
