IRSEEM

Formed in 2001 by ESIGELEC with the support of manufacturers and institutional bodies, IRSEEM (Embedded Electronic Systems Research Institute) has quickly developed collaborative research with its partners and transfers technologies to regional sectors in the automobile, aviation, electronics, telecommunications and energy industries. These activities are focused on a theme which is important for all these industries – embedded systems. The areas of research IRSEEM focus on are defined via close consultation with partners in industry and higher education and evolve according to economic, environmental and societal needs; a transversal team ensures that the research is widely distributed and put to best use.

The Ministry for Higher Education and Research awarded IRSEEM with the ‘Host Team’ (EA 4353) label in 2008 in recognition of the quality of its teams’ research work. It also recognises the relevance of their strategic choices with regard to the economic development of the Haute Normandie and Parisian ‘Grand Bassin’ regions in particular, as well as the important work published by its academic research staff. The academic research staff at the institute improve their expertise and teaching methods by drawing on the work carried out there. In addition, the institute facilitates training in research for students at ESIGELEC and also uses students’ research itself as part of the training. The Ministry for Higher Education and Research also gave IRSEEM the CRT label (Technological Resource Centre) in 2007 which assures partner businesses they are receiving a quality support service.

IRSEEM’s activities take place mainly within the context of large research and development organisms put in place by local authorities, France and Europe. IRSEEM also supports ESIGELEC’s international policy and is strengthening its relations with India, China and developing countries in general. The following methods are mainly being used:

  • Competitiveness clusters (MOV’EO, Nov@log, Aerospace Valley, TES, Astech)
  • Large regional research networks attached to the CPER scheme (government regional project agreement)
  • French National Research Agency requests for proposals
  • Franco-British cross border cooperation (INTERREG IV strand A)
  • European cooperation (FP7, INTERREG IV strands B and C, MEDEA+),
  • Cooperative devices (Doctoral schools and the Carnot ESP Institute (Energy and Propulsion Systems)

Research areas have been structured in such a way that the vehicle (or any other mobile object) and its surroundings can be studied as a whole. IRSEEM is made up of 4 centres of activity which carries out all research work and transfers the technologies to the business environment.

  • Electronics & Systems (electromagnetism, EMC and hyper frequencies)
  • Automation & Systems (control and engine diagnostics, monitoring of complex systems)
  • Instrumentation, IT & Systems (instrumentation and signals)

IRSEEM groups together nearly 125 people comprising 30 academic research staff including 5 HDR holders (post doctoral degree allowing the holder to teach doctoral students), 12 research engineers, 1 post-doctoral research fellow, 40 doctoral students, 4 technicians and on average, 25 interns per year.
An administrative department of 9 people completes the range of staff and includes 3 project executives and an assistant who help engineer projects, seek finance and manage the administration involved.
