IRSEEM

Formed in 2001 by ESIGELEC with the support of manufacturers and institutional bodies, IRSEEM (Embedded Electronic Systems Research Institute) has quickly developed collaborative research with its partners and transfers technologies to regional sectors in the automobile, aviation, electronics, telecommunications and energy industries. These activities are focused on a theme which is important for all these industries – embedded systems. The areas of research IRSEEM focus on are defined via close consultation with partners in industry and higher education and evolve according to economic, environmental and societal needs; a transversal team ensures that the research is widely distributed and put to best use. IRSEEM was granted the “Host team” (EA 4353) label by the Ministry for Higher Education and Research for the quality of its teams’ research work. Its CRT label (Technological Ressources Center) was also renewed in June 2010, thus acknowledging the professionalism of the transfer teams.

Missions

IRSEEM carries out 4 main missions:

  • Research training and research-based training through PhD courses
  • Scientific production leading to animation and increasing knowledge
  • Upholding of ESIGELEC’s teaching staff
  • Answer to industrial needs

Objectives

IRSEEM dedicates all of its activities to research, development, innovation and transfer, and structures its research areas according to 3 main themes. A transversal team is in charge of the communication and valorization of the research work and makes the results available to companies, SMEs and majors. IRSEEM’s research activities are part of the partner-oriented research, as defined by the Research National Agency (ANR), which is a research activity led in partnership with actors from the business world and answers economic and social needs they have expressed.

Organization

IRSEEM is a founding member of the ESP Carnot Institute (Energie and Propulsion Systems). Created and accredited in November 2006, the ESP Carnot Institute’s goal is to bring scientific and technological solutions to the optimization of energetic arrangements and propulsion systems, which constitutes one of the answers to current challenges: the shortage of fossil fuel and the impact of harmful emissions on health and environment. The other founding members are CORIA (Aero-thermo-chemistry Interprofessional Research Center, UMR 6614), GPM (Material Physics Group, UMR 6634), CEVAA (Vibro-Acoustics Study Center for Automobile) and CERTAM (Technological Research Study Center for Aero-thermal and Engine).

IRSEEM’s activity units join their competences in electronics, automation, signal and image processing , networks and telecommunication within partner-oriented research programs in order to come up with innovative and sustainable answers to the challenge of electronic embedded systems, as they are more and more present in surrounding objects and projects, whether it be automobile, aeronautics or space. Those research units were organized so as to structure human and material needs and focus them on technologies and key sciences or major missions:

  • Electronics & Systems (electromagnetism, EMC and hyper frequencies)
  • Automation & Systems (control and engine diagnostics, monitoring of complex systems)
  • Instrumentation, IT & Systems (instrumentation and signals)

The SRT transversal team (Technological Resources Service), made up of 3 transfer engineers and 4 technicians, supports the research activities led by the 3 units and ensures the dissemination and the valorization of their work to the economic partners. This organization enables a quick and efficient transfer toward industrial partners, giving a good image of the teams, works and technologies developed within the institute. It also gives a better access to research programs to SMEs with which IRSEEM has developed relations funded on trust and reciprocity. The SRT works in close collaboration with the cell specifically dedicated to valorization, innovation, entrepreneurship and prototyping.

31 teachers-researchers (5 Habilitation to conduct researches), 5 technicians, 27 PhD, 3 post-doctoral students and 8 research engineers are currently dedicated to research. To structure ESIGELEC and IRSEEM’s research activity and face the increasing number of PhD and post-doctoral students, a Doctoral Training Department was created in 2009 at ESIGELEC. Moreover, to support the increasing number of research projects in which researchers and PhD students at IRSEEM are involved, the administrative support and engineering cell was reinforced and is now constituted by 5 people.
